The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has made a final decision regarding the U20 Asian Cup qualifiers, which has put U20 Vietnam in a difficult position. The AFC announced that the Philippines will no longer participate in Group A of the 2027 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers. As a result, the group now consists of only three teams: South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, and Lebanon.

This decision means that the competition format will be adjusted to accommodate the reduced number of teams. However, the AFC has chosen not to add any replacement teams for the Philippines, leaving Group A with just three teams. This situation significantly impacts the chances of all participating teams, including U20 Vietnam, to advance.

With the Philippines withdrawing, Group A of the 2026 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers now has only three teams. The tournament format involves 32 teams divided into eight groups, each with four teams, competing in a round-robin format from August 31 to September 6, 2026. At the end of the qualifiers, the eight group winners and the seven best second-placed teams will qualify for the final round of the U20 Asian Cup 2027 in China.

In this context, U20 Vietnam faces a challenging group, competing against Iran, North Korea, and Palestine. While Palestine is considered the weakest team in the group and represents an opportunity for U20 Vietnam to secure three points, the overall competition remains tough. If U20 Vietnam does not finish first in the group, they will be at a disadvantage when comparing results with other second-placed teams, as matches against the last-placed team will not be counted.

The withdrawal of the Philippines has made an already difficult situation even more challenging for U20 Vietnam. However, U20 Vietnam does have a significant advantage as they will host Group C of the 2026 U20 Asian Cup qualifiers at home. The matches will take place at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, allowing U20 Vietnam to prepare optimally for their upcoming games.
