USA vs Belgium Live Match: Balogun Starts, Lukaku on Bench
The upcoming match between the USA and Belgium on July 7 features Folarin Balogun starting for the USA after

In a significant decision during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA has dismissed an appeal from the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) concerning the eligibility of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. Balogun, who received a red card in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, will be able to participate in the upcoming round-of-16 game against Belgium, as FIFA has suspended his one-game ban for a probationary period.
The controversy began when Balogun was sent off after a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic during the United States’ 2-0 victory in the round of 32. Initially, the referee did not issue a card, but after reviewing the incident via the pitchside monitor, the decision was reversed, resulting in Balogun's dismissal. According to FIFA regulations, a red card automatically incurs a one-game suspension, and there is no provision for teams to appeal such decisions.
Belgium formally objected to the suspension being lifted, stating that they had “no alternative but to challenge Balogun’s eligibility for the upcoming match.” However, FIFA’s appeal committee deemed the RBFA's request as “inadmissible,” citing that the federation was not a party to the proceedings and thus lacked standing to appeal.
In response, the RBFA expressed disappointment, indicating that they had not received adequate grounds for FIFA's decision and had been awaiting further information regarding the player’s eligibility. They stated, “To date, the RBFA has still not received any grounds for this decision,” highlighting their concerns about compliance with FIFA regulations.
U.S. Soccer officials have been approached for comments regarding the situation. The decision to suspend Balogun's ban reportedly involved significant intervention, including a call from U.S. President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, prompting scrutiny over the integrity of the competition.
Belgium's head coach, Rudi Garcia, expressed skepticism about the situation, suggesting it might be a prank and emphasizing that the federation was defending not just its team, but the integrity of football as a whole. He remarked, “It’s the first time in World Cup history that a decision like this has been made.”
Balogun, who has been a key player for the U.S. team, has scored twice in the tournament and will be looking to contribute significantly against Belgium. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino defended the decision to lift the ban, asserting that it was a matter of justice and that the U.S. team was not benefiting unfairly from the situation.
As the match approaches, the focus remains on the pitch, with both teams preparing for a crucial encounter in the knockout stage of the tournament.
