In a recent revelation, Reinhard Grindel, the former president of the German Football Association (DFB), stated that Jürgen Klopp was a prime candidate to take over as head coach of the German national football team in 2022. This plan was initially discussed in 2019, following Germany's disappointing performance at the 2018 World Cup.
Grindel explained that a loose agreement was in place for Klopp to succeed Joachim Löw, who had been under significant pressure after the team's early exit from the 2018 tournament. "This was known to Klopp, as representatives from the DFB discussed it with him in Liverpool during the spring of 2019," Grindel said. However, due to Grindel's resignation in April 2019 amid public outcry over a hasty contract extension with Löw, these discussions did not progress further.
Ultimately, Löw remained in charge until November 2021, when Hansi Flick took over after another disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar. Currently, Klopp is once again in the spotlight as a leading candidate to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who is expected to be dismissed soon. The DFB is reportedly considering whether to give Nagelsmann another chance before making a final decision.
The discussions around Klopp's potential role highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the DFB in securing a successful future for the national team. As the football world watches closely, Klopp's name continues to resonate as a symbol of hope for German football fans.
