Elaine Thompson-Herah of Team Jamaica completed a second successive Olympic sprint double on Tuesday when she won the 200m gold in a blistering 21.53, the second-fastest time in history.

The Jamaican controlled the race from the start and was a clear winner, but 18-year-old Christine Mboma of Namibia produced an astonishing final 30m to make up four places and take silver in 21.81.

Thompson-Herah, 29, who won the 100m on Saturday, became the first woman to successfully defend the sprint double, breaking Merlene Ottey’s national record on the way.

American Gabby Thomas, who had the fastest time of the season of 21.61 coming into the race, took the bronze in 21.87, just edging out 100m silver medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (21.94).

Spain edged hosts Japan 1-0 in a tense semifinal of the Tokyo 2020 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament at the Saitama Stadium on August 3. The game needed extra-time to separate the sides after 90 minutes of regular time failed to produce a goal or a winner.

Real Madrid star Marco Asensio settled the affair five minutes from the end of the extra-time session with a wicked curling shot from the right side of the penalty area.

The Spaniards now move on to the August 7 gold-medal match against Brazil, who moved past Mexico thanks to a penalty shootout (following a goalless draw through 120 minutes of regular and extra-time), in the other semifinal from the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium.

Japan and Mexico will fight it out for bronze on August 6 in Saitama.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic medal count as of 10.45pm on August 3.
