Anne Carson Awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has won the prestigious 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The award was announced on Thursday, October 8, 2026, by the Swedish Academy, which cited her "bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." The prize is valued at 12 million Swedish crowns, approximately $1.2 million.

Carson is well-known for her genre-defying works that often blend verse, prose, dialogue, and translation. Her literary contributions include translations of classical Greek literature, which have significantly influenced her writing style. Notable works include her verse novel "Autobiography of Red" published in 1998 and the performance piece "Norma Jeane Baker of Troy" from 2019, which intertwines the narratives of Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe.

With this honor, Carson joins the ranks of literary giants such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro, and Ernest Hemingway. The Nobel Prize in Literature has faced criticism over the years for overlooking some of the most revered authors, including Leo Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf. However, defenders of the Academy argue that it plays a crucial role in highlighting lesser-known literary traditions and expanding readers' horizons.

Established in the will of Alfred Nobel, the prizes have been awarded since 1901 for achievements in literature, science, and peace. Last year's Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, known as the "master of the apocalypse" by American critic Susan Sontag.
