A large Bodhi tree, measuring over 20 meters tall and approximately 3 meters in diameter, collapsed across Dinh Tien Hoang Street in central Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of October 7. The incident occurred around 6 AM, causing one minor injury and significant traffic disruptions for nearly three hours as commuters were heading to work and school.
The fallen tree blocked Dinh Tien Hoang Street, which is a major thoroughfare in District 1, leading to congestion that spread to surrounding roads including Vo Thi Sau, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Hai Ba Trung, and Pham Ngoc Thach. Witnesses reported that there was no rain or strong winds at the time of the incident, raising questions about the tree's structural integrity.
The tree's branches also fell onto several nearby houses and shops, causing minor damage to signage. A motorcyclist was lightly injured after being struck by a branch. Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, with green space workers trimming branches and clearing the fallen tree to restore traffic flow.
Traffic police set up barriers approximately 200 meters from the fallen tree to redirect vehicles, guiding them onto Nguyen Van Giai Street to avoid the area. By 9:30 AM, workers were still clearing the site, cutting the tree into smaller pieces for easier removal.
This incident follows another recent traffic disruption in the same area caused by heavy construction equipment that had fallen across the road, highlighting ongoing challenges with urban infrastructure in Ho Chi Minh City.
