A significant corruption scandal has emerged at Phu Tho General Hospital, involving the procurement of medical equipment from Viet My Company, led by Chairman Bui Chan Phuong. The investigation by the Ministry of Public Security has resulted in the arrest of key officials, including Nguyen Huy Ngoc, Vice Chairman of Phu Tho Province, and Le Dinh Thanh Son, Director of the hospital, for receiving bribes.

According to reports, Viet My Company has won numerous contracts for medical equipment at the hospital, with one notable contract worth 144.5 billion VND. The company has been involved in hundreds of bidding processes for medical equipment over the years, particularly from 2022 to 2025. For instance, in late 2022, they secured a contract worth 2.92 billion VND for the maintenance of a linear accelerator system.

In January 2024, the company won another contract for a nuclear medicine imaging system valued at 25.4 billion VND, bidding 25.25 billion VND, which was 150 million VND lower than the initial price. The most significant contract came in April 2025, where they were awarded a contract for a multi-energy linear accelerator and a CT simulation system worth 145.5 billion VND, bidding slightly lower at 144.5 billion VND.

The investigation has revealed that Bui Chan Phuong, along with other associates, has been implicated in a broader scheme involving multiple companies, including the establishment of firms in Singapore and Hong Kong to inflate prices of medical equipment before importing them into Vietnam. This scheme has reportedly led to significant financial losses for the state and adversely affected patient care.

As the investigation unfolds, it raises serious questions about the integrity of procurement processes in Vietnam's healthcare system and the accountability of public officials involved in these transactions.
