Vietnam's Film Department Urges Diversity Amid Horror Film Surge

The Vietnam Film Department has recently issued an urgent notice urging filmmakers and distributors to diversify their content in response to the rising prevalence of horror films in the country. As of June 19, the horror film "Ma xó" has grossed 135 billion VND, leading the box office alongside other horror titles such as "Lầu chú Hỏa" and "Bầy xác sống." This surge in horror films has raised alarms within the department, prompting them to take action.

According to the notice, which was released on June 16, the Film Department has observed an unprecedented influx of horror films in Vietnamese cinemas. The department's head, Đặng Trần Cường, noted that many of these films excessively emphasize violent and gory elements, often neglecting artistic quality and meaningful social messages.

In light of these concerns, the Film Department has called on filmmakers to take social responsibility by enhancing the aesthetic direction and spiritual life of the public, particularly among youth and impressionable audiences. They emphasized the importance of producing films that reflect the rich culture and history of Vietnam, promoting positive narratives about patriotism, solidarity, and social responsibility.

The notice also highlighted that some imported horror films have had to undergo content modifications to comply with Vietnamese laws, impacting their commercial viability. The department urged all stakeholders to carefully consider the themes and content of both local and foreign films, ensuring they align with cultural values and legal standards.

Furthermore, the Film Department expressed a desire for collaboration among filmmakers to build a diverse and culturally rich Vietnamese cinema that can compete on a global scale. They encouraged projects that inspire and uplift, contributing to a greater understanding of Vietnamese identity and values.

As horror films continue to dominate the box office, the Film Department's call for diversity reflects a broader need to balance entertainment with cultural integrity and social responsibility.
