Upcoming court trial on Vạn Thịnh Phát case will see many big businessmen stand trial with Mrs. Trương Mỹ Lan. Among them is a businessman who was generously granted 1.5 trillion VND by Vạn Thịnh Phát Chairman.

Related to Vạn Thịnh Phát case, 86 people have been prosecuted for offenses including: "Embezzlement"; "Violation of regulations on banking operations and other activities related to banking operations"; "Offering bribes"; "Accepting bribes"; "Abusing position and power while performing official duties"; "Negligence causing serious consequences"; and "Abusing trust to misappropriate property".

Some prominent businessmen set to stand trial include:

• Mr. Dương Tấn Trước (CEO of Tường Việt Company). Mr. Trước knew Mrs. Trương Mỹ Lan since 2020. In April 2021, they discussed Mrs. Lan transferring Thanh Yến project to Mr. Trước and Tường Việt Company for 2.5 trillion VND. They agreed Mr. Trước did not need to pay but only needed to process a loan of 3.5 trillion VND from SCB bank, of which 2.5 trillion was for project transfer and 1 trillion for Mrs. Lan's use which she was responsible for repaying SCB. Mr. Trước then directed his staff to cooperate with SCB to borrow money through shell companies. SCB approved loans of 1.7 and 1.8 trillion VND respectively. The money was then circulated to accounts of Mrs. Lan's group and Vạn Thịnh Phát. Mrs. Lan is accused of appropriating 4.752 trillion VND with Mr. Trước's assistance.

• Mr. Nguyễn Cao Trí (Chairman of Văn Lang Company). Mrs. Lan knew him since 2017 through introduction. They agreed on 1 trillion VND investment in some of Mr. Trí's companies and projects. As guarantee for the 1 trillion, Mr. Trí transferred 10% stake in Văn Lang Company (under the name of an associate of Mrs. Lan per her instruction). However, after Mrs. Lan's arrest, Mr. Trí unilaterally adjusted value and terminated the deal to misappropriate the 1 trillion VND. His action is deemed as "Abusing trust to misappropriate property".

• Mr. Chu Nap Kee Eric (Chinese national, husband of Mrs. Lan) will also stand trial for "Violation of regulations on banking operations and other activities related to banking operations" for abetting his wife.

The upcoming trial promises to be intriguing as it will shed light on dealings between Mrs. Lan and these prominent businessmen, some of whom have faced unexpected turns of fate after their association with Vạn Thịnh Phát. As a key economic and political issue, the case is being closely watched.
