HCMC - Covid-19 is continuing to spread in Vietnam as the Ministry of Health confirmed 400 new domestic cases this afternoon, July 7, which led the country's total so far to rise to 22,741.

HCMC continued to record the biggest number of new infections with 347 cases, followed by Long An with 19 and Quang Ngai with 13. The Health Ministry also confirmed six cases in Bac Ninh, four in Phu Yen, three in Tra Vinh, three in Bac Giang and two in Nghe An. Ca Mau, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Daklak reported one new case each.

Ca Mau reported a Covid-19 case for the first time in the fourth Covid-19 wave since late April, becoming the 56th locality hit by the pandemic in the new outbreak. The country’s total number of domestic Covid-19 infections in the latest outbreak has amounted to 19,238.

HCMC’s Covid-19 cases have exceeded 8,000 and the city remains the country’s biggest hotspot, followed by Bac Giang with 5,676 cases and Bac Ninh with 1,628 cases.

Many supermarkets in HCMC have been overloaded since early this morning as residents rushed to buy necessities over fears of a further lockdown. Another reason is that most wet markets and wholesale markets in the city have been temporarily suspended to curb the spread of the pandemic.

“I rushed to the supermarket very early this morning but I had to wait for an hour until my turn,” Hanh, a local woman, said while going shopping at a supermarket in Thu Duc City.

Mobile apps of supermarkets and convenience stores such as Vinmart, Saigon Co.op, Big C, Go!, Bach Hoa Xanh and Lottemart have also been overloaded and many products have been out of stock due to an upsurge in orders.

A leader of Saigon Co.op said the supermarket chain will ensure sufficient supply of goods, especially necessities such as rice, sugar, salt and cooking oil, for the public. “The consumers should not rush to supermarkets at the moment. Large gatherings may cause new Covid-19 infection clusters,” he said.

“People should not worry because goods will be distributed through multiple channels, meeting the demand of every one,” said Nguyen Nguyen Phuong, deputy director of the HCMC Department of Industry and Trade.
