Vietnam’s Ha Long City has more to offer than just Ha Long Bay

Touristy Ha Long City in the northern province of Quang Ninh has been chosen as one of the 12 destinations to host the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam.

Aside from its world-famous Ha Long Bay, the city offers visitors a wide range of experiences including museums, beaches, aerial tours, and more.

Inaugurated in October 2013, the Quang Ninh Museum has quickly become a must-see attraction for visitors to Ha Long City. The 15,000-square-meter museum boasts more than 6,000 artifacts, documents, and images about Quang Ninh displayed throughout its two exhibition blocks and garden. The venue is open to visitors from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Tickets fetch VND10,000-30,000 (US$0.43-1.29). Photo: Nam Tran / Tuoi Tre

Traveling throughout Ha Long Bay by yacht is another popular tourist experience. Cruise routes from Ha Long Bay normally offer three different itineraries through Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, or Lan Ha Bay. A two-day-one-night trip costs from VND2.4-3 million ($103.5-129.5). Taking in a bird’s-eye view of Ha Long Bay from a helicopter is a can’t-miss opportunity that has just launched during this year's tourist season. Tickets for an aerial tour are priced at VND1.9-6.2 million ($82-267.5), depending on each time range and seat. Photo: Nam Tran / Tuoi Tre

Recently, kayaking on the bay has been introduced, but most kayaking trips take place in May when the sea is calm. Famous kayaking spots in Ha Long include Ha Long Bay, Dong Tien Lake, Trinh Nu Cave, Trong Cave, Ba Hang Village, Luon Cave, and Tung Sau Bay. Prices for a kayaking tour range from VND30,000 ($1.3) to VND100,000 ($4.3), depending on the area. Photo: Minh Chau / Tuoi Tre
