While cross-chain bridging solutions are widely used, many users are unaware of the full scope of the hazards involved.

Etherscan reports that 80,000 in Wrapped ETH (WETH) was deposited into the hacker’s wallet. As a result, substantial quantities of ETH on the Solana blockchain are no longer supported.

Developers are now talking with the hackers, who issued an on-chain message on Notifi asking a 10 million refund:

“This is the Wormhole Deployer: We noticed you were able to exploit the Solana VAA verification and mint tokens. We’d like to offer you a whitehat agreement, and present you a bug bounty of $10 million for exploit details, and returning the wETH you’ve minted.”

In the tweet, the Ethereum co-founder expressed his objection to Ethereum and other blockchains using cross-chain solutions due to the growing threat vectors of bridging assets when they are transferred over an expanding number of chains and decentralized apps.
