HCMC - Many firms and traders in Guangzhou City in China have expressed interest in purchasing Vietnam’s fishery products, Le Hoang Tai, deputy head of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, told a recent online Vietnam-China seafood trade exchange.

The trade exchange attracted the participation of over 30 Vietnamese seafood firms, which introduced various fishery products such as shrimps, crabs, fish and frozen items to Chinese importers and traders.

During the trade exchange, jointly held by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency and a branch of the Vietnam Trade Office in Guangzhou and the Guangzhou Fisheries Association, firms in Guangzhou highlighted their demand for Vietnam’s lobsters, tiger shrimps, white-leg shrimps, basa fish, tuna, crabs, squids, octopus and sea cucumbers.

Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, deputy director of Vietrade’s Export Support Center, said that a large number of orders were received at the event. Each Guangzhou firm needs four or five containers of aquatic products each week to serve the demands of Guangzhou and other markets in China.

Many Vietnamese fishery firms such as Vinh Hoan Company, Mega A, Baria Group, Dai Thanh, Godaco, Hung Hau, IDI and Le Thanh are prepared to supply the products, she added.

Besides, several Guangzhou firms expressed interest in buying Vietnam’s high-quality aquatic products to be exported to Japan and Europe, the local media reported.

At the event, Chinese firms also proposed Vietrade support them in setting up their branches in Vietnam to buy aquatic products easily.

Speaking at the event, Tai said that the interest in the import of Vietnam’s fishery products from Guangzhou firms was a good sign for Vietnam’s aquatic sector amid the spread of Covid-19 in many localities affecting the supply chain.

Due to the pandemic, Vietnam’s export of aquatic products to Guangzhou has faced many difficulties and traditional trade promotion activities have been postponed or canceled.

Over the past few months, Vietrade has coordinated with the Vietnamese Trade Offices abroad and trade associations to organize trade promotion activities, while connecting domestic exporters, suppliers and trading service providers, and updating local firms on market developments to seek markets for fishery exports.

The deputy head of Vietrade expected the trade exchange to help Vietnamese firms study the needs and requirements of the Guangzhou market and seek more partners.

On August 10, Vietrade helped connect 30 Vietnamese aquatic firms with partners in Romania, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

The trade exchange event was part of a series of online conferences connecting consumption and boosting exports of agricultural and fishery products of the Southern and Central Highlands regions hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on August 6, 9 and 10.
