Vietnam's president and other candidates for the 15^th National Assembly deputies elections, on May 10, met with voters at Division 317 in Hoc Mon District of Ho Chi Minh City.

At the meeting, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasised the role and responsibility of the army and Division 317 in particular, saying that during the two resistance wars, the army was "absolutely loyal to the Party, the fatherland and people."

Over the past 35 years of Doi Moi (reforms), Vietnam has preserved and promoted the image of “Uncle Ho’s soldiers,” which is a source of great pride, the leader continued.

In the peaceful era, the army has been a pioneer in responding to floods and landslides, and fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, he added.

Phuc reiterated society-economy, security-defence and diplomacy as the three major pillars of Vietnam, with security-defence being a firm foundation.

He urged localities to step-up economic development to gain more resources to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Responding to a voter’s question on solutions to help HCMC optimise its potential, advantages and resources to grow, Phuc said each individual and organisation in Vietnam should nurture aspirations and dreams of a prosperous and powerful nation.

He said a key soltio was to promote such aspirations.

Moreover, he said the city needed good resources, firstly from young generations, and a good scientific-technological foundation, further explaining that the fourth industrial revolution, digital economy, digital society and e-Government would lead to successes.

The leader also suggested incentives to encourage talented people to contribute to the country, saying it was a must to ensure democracy so that everyone can bring their talents in national development into play.

Following the meeting with local voters, Phuc received religious dignitaries, monks and priests in Hoc Mon District, during which he affirmed that the state always respected people’s right to belief and religious freedom, as protected by the law.

The leader recognised and lauded the contributions made by religions to the district’s development.

Phuc said he was happy to see that almost all religious dignitaries, monks, priests and followers in Hoc Mon had united and joined hands with the local administration and residents in boosting socio-economic development.

Most Venerable Thich Minh Thanh, head of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Board of Hoc Mon District, spoke highly of the Party and state's achievements as well as the government's successes from 2016 to 2021.

Thanh also expressed delight at the strong growth for HCMC and Hoc Mon, pledging to work to encourage Buddhist monks, nuns and followers to join the upcoming general election, and contribute to its success.

Priest Nguyen Ngoc Vuong, head of Hoc Mon Parish, highlighted the tradition of patriotism among local residents.

He said that over the years, the National Assembly has efficiently worked and met the aspirations of voters.

Phuc said that he highly valued the trust of religious dignitaries, monks and followers in the Party and state, and praised the local administration and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in implementing religious policies.

Noting that hostile forces often make corrupt use of ethnic and religious issues to try to undermine the Party and State, he called on all Vietnamese, regardless of religion, to maintain solidarity and mutual support, and join hands to build a prosperous country.

He thanked religious dignitaries for their opinions, describing them as valuable contributions that would elp the Party and state perform better in protecting people’s right to freedom of belief and religion.

The state leader asked the local administration to work harder to care for the material and spiritual lives of religious practitioners, and expressed his hope that all religions in Hoc Mon would continue to stay united and encourage followers to live a “good life and follow a beautiful religion” and engage further in local socio-economic development.
