EuroLeague Owners to Vote on Expansion Amid NBA Offer

EuroLeague Owners to Vote on Expansion Amid NBA Offer

The EuroLeague owners of 13 clubs are expected to gather in Lake Como to make a pivotal decision regarding the future of the competition. On Tuesday, they will vote on expanding the EuroLeague to include 24 teams starting from the 2027-28 season, which would introduce eight new franchises into the league.

Currently, there are 13 candidates vying for these franchise spots, including Hapoel Jerusalem and Aris BC, in addition to the initial 11 clubs that presented their proposals at the end of August. The list of candidates includes notable teams such as Crvena zvezda, Dubai, Hapoel Tel Aviv, London Lions, Napoli Basket, PAOK, Paris, Partizan Belgrade, Roma Maxima, Valencia, and Virtus Bologna.

While the NBA has made an offer for a potential collaboration with the EuroLeague, it is not the focal point of the upcoming meeting. Neither the NBA nor FIBA representatives will attend this gathering, which was scheduled prior to the NBA's proposal. Although the future of basketball in Europe and the NBA's offer will be discussed, the primary agenda remains centered on the EuroLeague's expansion.

Sources indicate that the NBA's offer does not involve a buyout of the EuroLeague, and it appears insufficient for any meaningful collaboration at this time. With less than a year until the anticipated launch of NBA Europe, the landscape of European basketball may see a significant shift, potentially leading to a scenario where two competing leagues exist.
