The Vietnam national football team is gearing up for a crucial match against Malaysia in the third-place playoff of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. This matchup, scheduled for October 5, is anticipated to be a tightly contested battle, with Vietnam looking to leverage their historical advantage against Malaysia.

Vietnam has a strong record against Malaysia, having won all of their last five encounters while conceding only one goal. However, the upcoming match in Jakarta is expected to present new challenges. Malaysia has shown impressive form in the tournament, securing a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh and a solid 0-0 draw against Indonesia, before dominating Singapore with a staggering 6-0 win. Their confidence is high, and they will be a formidable opponent for Vietnam.

Key player Dinh Bac has emerged as a crucial asset for Vietnam, showcasing his ability to change the course of the game. He played a significant role in Vietnam's recent 4-2 victory over Pakistan, scoring a goal and assisting others. His speed and ability to exploit spaces could be vital against a Malaysian side that is likely to adopt an aggressive approach.

Vietnam's coach, Kim Sang Sik, will need to address some concerns regarding player fitness, particularly with defender Bui Hoang Viet Anh potentially sidelined. This may require tactical adjustments to ensure a solid defensive line while maintaining control in midfield. The team will aim to avoid getting drawn into a physical contest with Malaysia, focusing instead on strategic play and capitalizing on counter-attacking opportunities.

As the match approaches, Vietnam's players are reminded of their historical success against Malaysia, but they must remain vigilant. The outcome may hinge on decisive moments rather than overwhelming dominance. If Vietnam can maintain defensive solidity and utilize their attacking strengths effectively, they have a strong chance of concluding the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 on a high note with a predicted victory of 2-1 over Malaysia.

In terms of player lineup, Vietnam is expected to feature Patrik Le Giang, Adou Minh, Pham Xuan Manh, Le Ngoc Bao, Phan Tuan Tai, Le Pham Thanh Long, Nguyen Hoang Duc, Truong Tien Anh, Nguyen Dinh Bac, Williams Minh Hoang, and Nguyen Tai Loc. Meanwhile, Malaysia's squad will include Hazmi, Cheng, Shamsul, Tapp, Ting, Hidalgo, Laine, Aiman, Wilkin, Tierney, and Bergson.
