Switzerland vs Slovenia: Nations League Match Preview

Switzerland is preparing to take on Slovenia in the Nations League, showcasing their ambitions to lead the group. Following a decisive 3-0 victory over Scotland, where Zeki Amdouni scored for the second consecutive match, the Swiss team is looking to maintain their winning streak.

In their last match, Switzerland benefited from Scotland being reduced to ten men for the majority of the game. With a FIFA ranking of 14 and a recent quarter-final appearance in the 2026 World Cup, Switzerland is a formidable opponent. Coach Murat Yakin's squad aims to build on their recent success after a shaky start in the Nations League.

Currently, Switzerland has two upcoming matches in this international window, facing Slovenia and North Macedonia. Slovenia, on the other hand, recently secured their first win in the Nations League by defeating North Macedonia after a goalless draw with Scotland. Coach Bostjan Cesar's team is looking to improve their standings after a challenging qualification campaign for the World Cup.

Historically, Switzerland has had the upper hand in their encounters with Slovenia, winning four of the last six meetings, including a 3-0 victory at home last year. This record adds pressure on Slovenia as they prepare for this away match.

In terms of squad news, Switzerland will be without captain Granit Xhaka and striker Breel Embolo, who together have a wealth of experience with 244 caps and 44 goals. However, Amdouni's recent form suggests he could fill the scoring void left by Embolo.

Slovenia will also miss key player Benjamin Sesko due to a long-term injury, which could impact their attacking options. Zan Vipotnik is expected to lead the front line in Sesko's absence, while goalkeeper Jan Oblak remains a crucial figure in their defense.

The match is scheduled for 1:45 AM on October 4, 2026, Vietnam time, and promises to be an exciting encounter as both teams vie for crucial points in the Nations League.
