On the evening of October 3, U23 South Korea emerged victorious against U23 Japan with a score of 1-0 in the final match of the men's football tournament at ASIAD 20. This victory marks South Korea's fourth consecutive gold medal in men's football at the Asian Games, following their wins in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
The final took place at Toyota Stadium and began with a balanced first half. U23 Japan, playing on home soil, took the initiative to control the ball and created several dangerous situations. Meanwhile, U23 South Korea focused on counter-attacks, waiting for opportunities to strike.
In the sixth minute, Eom Ji Sung had a notable chance after intercepting the ball in midfield and driving into the Japanese penalty area. However, his shot went over the crossbar. U23 Japan responded with attacks from the flanks, and in the 36th minute, Fukunaga's angled shot deflected off a South Korean defender, almost finding its way into the net. The first half ended in a stalemate at 0-0.
After the break, U23 Japan continued to apply pressure. Fukunaga had another opportunity early in the second half, but his angled shot missed the target. Yokoyama also squandered a favorable chance shortly after.
In a surprising turn of events, U23 South Korea scored the opening goal in the 61st minute. Yang Min Hyeok broke down the right wing and delivered a dangerous cross. Japanese goalkeeper Araki attempted to parry the ball, but it fell to Eom Ji Sung, who controlled it and decisively shot into the net.
Trailing by a goal, U23 Japan pushed forward in search of an equalizer. In the 72nd minute, Yokoyama skillfully dribbled past defenders before shooting, but the South Korean goalkeeper was well-positioned to make a clean save.
In the 79th minute, U23 Japan had their best chance to level the score when Ishii struck a shot from outside the box that hit the post, narrowly missing the equalizer. Despite their continued efforts, U23 Japan could not break through South Korea's defense.
U23 South Korea managed to hold onto their slender lead, securing a 1-0 victory and the gold medal. U23 Japan concluded their ASIAD campaign with a silver medal, having had a remarkable journey, including a semifinal victory over U23 Uzbekistan on penalties before facing defeat against South Korea in the final.
