U23 South Korea Claims ASIAD Gold with Victory Over Japan

U23 South Korea celebrated a hard-fought victory against U23 Japan in the final match of the ASIAD 2026, clinching the gold medal with a score of 1-0. Despite being under pressure for much of the game, South Korea managed to take the lead in the second half.

The match began with U23 South Korea showing enthusiasm, creating an opportunity to score in the 6th minute. Eom Ji Sung intercepted the ball from deep in Japan's territory and made a run towards the penalty area, but his shot went over the bar. This chance was one of the few for South Korea in the first half, as U23 Japan gradually took control of the game.

After about 15 minutes, Japan started to dominate, creating several good opportunities. In the 36th minute, Fukunaga's angled shot hit a defender and nearly found its way into the net. Both teams had chances to score, but neither could capitalize in the first half, which ended in a stalemate.

As the second half commenced, U23 Japan intensified their efforts to find the net. However, it was South Korea that shocked the hosts by scoring in the 61st minute. Yang Min Hyeok evaded a defender and delivered a dangerous cross. Japan's goalkeeper Araki attempted to save it but could only deflect the ball, allowing Eom Ji Sung to control it and fire home, putting South Korea ahead.

In the remaining time, U23 Japan pressed hard for an equalizer, but South Korea's defense held firm, ensuring they maintained their slender lead. The final whistle confirmed U23 South Korea's victory, awarding them the gold medal at ASIAD 2026.

The final score was U23 South Korea 1, U23 Japan 0, with Eom Ji Sung scoring the only goal of the match in the 61st minute.
