Lionel Messi is under scrutiny for a head pat on 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan during a heated MLS match

Lionel Messi, the renowned forward for Inter Miami, has been fined for an incident that took place during a Major League Soccer (MLS) match against the Philadelphia Union. The occurrence happened on August 19, 2026, at Subaru Park, where Messi lashed out at Philadelphia's Quinn Sullivan after Sullivan elbowed him following a play.
The match, which concluded in a 2-2 draw, featured a tense atmosphere that escalated into a confrontation between the players. Messi, visibly upset by the elbowing incident, retaliated by slapping Sullivan around the back of the head. Fortunately, the referee intervened before the situation could worsen.
Following the match, the MLS disciplinary committee announced that Messi would face an undisclosed fine for violating the league's policy regarding hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent. The statement confirmed that the fine was specifically for Messi's actions in the 101st minute of the match.
This match was particularly contentious, culminating in two red cards issued during stoppage time. Inter Miami's Yannick Bright and Sullivan's brother, Cavan, were both dismissed from the game. Additionally, Miami's Ian Fray has also been fined for a separate clash with Sullivan during the match.
As of now, Inter Miami sits second in the Eastern Conference, trailing the leaders, Nashville, by seven points. The incident has drawn attention not only for Messi's involvement but also for the overall intensity of the match, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.
