Vinicius Junior Becomes a Veteran at Real Madrid at 26

At the age of 26, Vinicius Junior has surprisingly become one of the oldest players in the Real Madrid locker room. After joining the club eight years ago, the Brazilian forward is not only one of the few remaining witnesses from the era when Los Blancos dominated Europe but also the player with the most official matches in the team’s history.

Vinicius first stepped into the iconic Bernabeu dressing room as an 18-year-old, surrounded by legends like Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, and Karim Benzema. Now, as these key figures have departed, he stands as a significant memory of that glorious chapter. The transition has been swift; at 26, Vinicius can be considered a veteran.

As the new season approaches, Vinicius will kick off the 2026/27 season as the player with the most official appearances for Real Madrid, totaling 375 matches. He surpasses teammates Fede Valverde and Thibaut Courtois, who have played 372 and 333 matches, respectively. Additionally, Vinicius is the current leading scorer on the team, with 128 goals to his name.

Leadership in football doesn’t always correlate with age, and Vinicius has emerged as a crucial leader for Real Madrid. His experiences, including tough Champions League matches and moments of doubt, have shaped his role within the team. In 20 appearances in the knockout stages of the Champions League, he has scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists across 17 games.

Vinicius's consistent performance is evident as he has scored over 20 goals for five consecutive seasons, peaking at 24 goals in the 2023/24 season. Last season, he netted 23 goals in 60 matches. Looking ahead, he is on track to challenge the club's all-time appearance record, currently held by Alfredo Di Stefano with 396 matches. If he maintains his pace of approximately 47 matches per season, he could reach this milestone by the end of his contract in 2032.

While Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 450 goals for Real Madrid remains a daunting challenge, Vinicius does not need to replicate that to carve out his own legacy at the club. More importantly, he is stepping into a new role, transitioning from a young player in the shadows of legends to a key figure who can narrate the story of a Real Madrid that once ruled Europe.

As Vinicius embraces this new chapter, he continues to connect two significant periods in the club's history, proving that age is just a number when it comes to leadership and influence on the pitch.
