Nico Williams Returns to Training Ahead of Portugal Clash
Nico Williams has rejoined the Spanish national team's training ahead of their crucial World Cup match

Lee Williams, a Vietnamese footballer with dual British-Vietnamese heritage, has officially received Vietnamese citizenship, thanks in part to the support of English football star Harry Kane. Despite this significant milestone, Williams will not be participating in the upcoming ASIAD 2026, which is set to take place in Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
Initially, Williams was expected to complete his citizenship process in early 2027. However, with the proactive assistance from his club, Ho Chi Minh City Police FC, the process was expedited. Williams, whose grandmother hails from Hanoi, finalized his citizenship paperwork on August 7. Unfortunately, his late inclusion means he was not selected for Vietnam's preliminary Olympic squad for the tournament.
The decision not to include him in the squad is a disappointment for Williams, especially considering his current form and eagerness to represent Vietnam. Although he will miss ASIAD 2026, he remains eligible to play for the U23 Vietnam team and the national squad in other competitions such as the SEA Games and the Asian U23 Championship, contingent on the trust of head coach Kim Sang Sik.
Williams moved to the V.League to seek professional development opportunities and has made a notable impact at Ho Chi Minh City Police FC. During the last season, he played 21 matches, scoring 9 goals and providing 2 assists. His performance has drawn attention, and he is expected to shine in the upcoming ASEAN Club Championship 2026/27.
