Benjamin Mendy Auctions World Cup Replica Amid Career Decline

Benjamin Mendy Auctions World Cup Replica Amid Career Decline

Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City defender, is selling a replica of the 2018 World Cup trophy, a piece that symbolizes a major milestone in his football career. The auction, which concluded on July 25, 2026, garnered approximately 54,000 euros. This decision follows a downturn in Mendy's career, which has been marred by legal troubles and a significant reduction in earnings.

The replica trophy was awarded to Mendy after he participated in France's victorious campaign in the 2018 World Cup held in Russia. It is an official version presented by the French Football Federation (FFF) and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The auction house noted that the base of the trophy has minor cracks, reportedly formed during years of storage.

In addition to the World Cup replica, Mendy is also auctioning various other memorabilia from his career, including items related to football legends Lionel Messi and Pele, which have attracted considerable interest from collectors.

Mendy was part of the French national team that won the World Cup in 2018 under coach Didier Deschamps, although he did not play a prominent role, making only ten appearances for France between March 2017 and November 2019. Despite being acquitted of eight charges of rape and sexual assault in July 2023, Mendy's career has rapidly declined. Currently, he plays for Pogon Szczecin in Poland, earning just over 11,600 euros per week, a stark contrast to his previous salary of nearly 590,000 euros per week while at Manchester City.
