The Vietnam national football team is currently on a remarkable winning streak, having secured 18 consecutive victories. This achievement surpasses Spain's previous record by three matches, yet it remains unrecognized as the longest winning streak in the world.

The team's success began with a dominant 7-0 victory against Timor Leste in the ASEAN Cup 2026, extending their winning streak that started with a win over Myanmar in December 2024. Following that, Vietnam achieved impressive results against teams like Singapore, Thailand (winning both finals), and Nepal in the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, along with victories against Laos, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

Despite this impressive record, the Vietnam team has faced challenges in gaining official recognition for their streak. A significant factor is the decision by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to overturn the result of a match against Malaysia in June 2024, where Vietnam initially lost 4-0. This match was marred by controversy over Malaysia's player eligibility, leading to a ruling that resulted in a 3-0 win for Vietnam instead.

According to Guinness World Records, the longest winning streak is still attributed to Spain, which achieved 15 consecutive wins from 2008 to 2009. This means that Vietnam's streak exceeds Spain's by three matches, yet the team remains in limbo regarding official recognition.

Two main reasons contribute to this situation. Firstly, it is unclear whether Guinness will acknowledge the 3-0 result awarded to Vietnam after the AFC's ruling or if they will continue to recognize the original 4-0 scoreline in favor of Malaysia. Secondly, among the 18 matches, three were friendly games, including victories of 6-0 against Siheung, 2-1 against Yongin, and 2-1 against Gangwon FC, which do not count as official matches.

To solidify their claim for recognition, the Vietnam team is set to play against Singapore on August 1, which could potentially clarify their standing with Guinness World Records regarding this impressive winning streak.
