Chelsea Verbal Agreement for £117m Morgan Rogers Transfer

Chelsea Football Club has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers, with a staggering fee of £117 million (€137 million, $157 million) accepted by Villa. Although the deal is still being finalized, sources indicate that personal terms have already been agreed upon for a six-year contract that will extend until 2032, with an option for an additional year. A medical examination for Rogers is scheduled for Monday.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who is currently representing England in the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has expressed a strong desire to join Chelsea. The club's new manager, Xabi Alonso, and the ambitious project he is leading have been significant factors in Rogers' decision to choose Chelsea over other suitors, including Arsenal.

This anticipated transfer would mark a record for Chelsea, surpassing the €121 million (£106 million, $131 million) previously paid to Benfica for Argentina's Enzo Fernandez during the 2023 winter transfer window. It would also exceed the British record fee of £116 million agreed upon by Manchester City for the signing of England midfielder Elliot Anderson this summer.

Rogers has made a name for himself as one of the Premier League's most formidable attacking midfielders, scoring 31 goals and providing 29 assists in 125 appearances for Aston Villa since his arrival from Middlesbrough in February 2024. His impressive performance last season included 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, contributing to Villa's qualification for the Champions League and their Europa League victory.

Having received his first senior England call-up in November 2024, Rogers has played a crucial role in the national team, featuring in all six matches of the World Cup thus far. He notably assisted England's only goal in the semi-final against Argentina.

Aston Villa, aware of the likelihood of losing Rogers, had set a price exceeding £100 million for his transfer. They plan to reinvest the funds into acquiring a winger, with potential targets including Ibrahim Mbaye and Crysencio Summerville, alongside recent signings like Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes.

As for Arsenal, who had identified Rogers as a key target for the transfer window, they are now reassessing their options in light of Chelsea's aggressive pursuit. With the price for Rogers escalating beyond their expectations, Arsenal may shift their focus to alternatives such as Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
