Argentina to Wear Lucky Jersey Against England in World Cup Semifinal

Argentina will don their away green jersey when they face England in the semifinals of the World Cup 2026, following a request from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) that FIFA has approved. This marks only the second time Argentina will wear this kit in the tournament, having previously used it in their 3-1 victory over Jordan in the group stage.

According to FIFA's color list, England, theoretically the home team, will wear their traditional white jersey with dark blue shorts, while Argentina will sport dark green shirts, black shorts, and black socks. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will wear a green-blue outfit. The decision has raised questions, as typically, Argentina would be required to wear their away jersey regardless of a formal request.

England is designated as the home team for this semifinal match, which will take place on neutral ground in Atlanta. FIFA rules allow the home team to choose their jersey color, and since both teams have traditional kits that could lead to confusion, it was deemed appropriate for Argentina to switch to their away colors.

The green jersey holds special significance for Argentina, particularly in matches against England. This color is reminiscent of the iconic jersey worn by Diego Maradona during the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal, where he scored two legendary goals against England, leading Argentina to a 2-1 victory and ultimately to their World Cup title.

The green jersey also brought Argentina joy in the 1998 World Cup, when they faced England in the Round of 16. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, but Argentina triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shootout, a game remembered for David Beckham's red card following a clash with Diego Simeone.

This semifinal will be the first time Argentina and England meet in this stage of the World Cup, having previously faced each other five times in the tournament. England won three of those encounters in 1962, 1966, and 2002, while Argentina emerged victorious twice in 1986 and 1998, both times wearing their away green kit.

Argentina aims to defend their title, a feat no team has accomplished since Brazil in 1962, while England hopes to end a 60-year wait since their last championship victory in 1966. The semifinal match is scheduled for 2 AM on Thursday, July 16, Hanoi time. The winner will advance to face either France or Spain in the World Cup 2026 final.
