Arsenal Football Club has confirmed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Illan Meslier from Leeds United. The 26-year-old joins Arsenal after spending seven successful seasons at Leeds, where he made a total of 215 appearances across all competitions, achieving an impressive 70 clean sheets.
Meslier began his football career at his hometown club, FC Lorient, where he progressed through the academy ranks. He signed his first professional contract in February 2018 and made his senior debut later that same year, notably keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory against Valenciennes FC in the Coupe de la Ligue at just 18 years old.
After a standout breakthrough season in France's second tier, where he made 28 appearances, Meslier joined Leeds United on a season-long loan in August 2019. He made his debut for Leeds at the Emirates Stadium during an FA Cup third-round match in January 2020. Following Leeds' promotion to the Premier League at the end of that season, his loan was made permanent.
Since then, Meslier has established himself as a key player for Leeds, making 107 appearances in the Premier League and showcasing his quality and experience as a goalkeeper. His arrival at Arsenal is seen as a significant boost to the club's goalkeeping options ahead of the upcoming season.
Upon signing, Meslier expressed his excitement, stating, "I’m extremely happy. It's a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England. I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again."
With Meslier's addition, Arsenal aims to strengthen their squad and enhance their chances of success in the forthcoming season.
