Neymar's Role in Brazil's World Cup Journey
As Brazil prepares for the 2026 World Cup, Neymar finds himself in a supportive role under coach Carlo

Former Brazil international Felipe Melo has expressed his disappointment with coach Carlo Ancelotti's decision to bench Neymar during Brazil's 1-2 loss to Norway in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Melo believes that this choice significantly impacted Brazil's performance in the match.
Neymar was substituted in the second half and managed to score Brazil's only goal from a penalty in stoppage time. However, his late introduction was not enough to change the outcome of the game, which saw Norway advance with two goals from Erling Haaland.
Melo stated, "It is easy to blame the coach entirely, but he must take responsibility. We invited one of the greatest coaches in history, and he is the first to bear the consequences of this defeat." He emphasized that Ancelotti and his coaching staff should be accountable for their tactical decisions during the match.
The former midfielder, who participated in the 2010 World Cup, disagreed with how Ancelotti utilized Neymar. He argued that Neymar should have started, especially since Lucas Paquetá was unavailable due to injury. Melo remarked, "I understand that every coach has their beliefs and choices. But if it were me, I would have started Neymar. Perhaps if he had played in the first half, he would have successfully converted the penalty, and the match could have unfolded differently."
Melo also pointed out that Brazil's defeat reflects ongoing issues that have persisted throughout their preparation for the World Cup.
In response to the loss, Ancelotti stated that the defeat should not be seen as the end but rather as the beginning of a new chapter for the Brazilian national team. He said, "Sometimes a loss is the start of a new journey. We must continue to work, seek new ideas, and look to the future."
