Eugenie Bouchard Highlights Aryna Sabalenka's Unusual Behavior at Wimbledon

Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon after defeating Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 6-4, 6-4. This victory marks the 15th consecutive Grand Slam event where the top seed has reached at least the fourth round. However, during the BBC's coverage of the match, former tennis player Eugenie Bouchard noted something unusual about Sabalenka's behavior.

Bouchard remarked that Sabalenka was not her usual overly positive self during the match. "She looked so solid, mentally as well. Her shots were working, and she was able to keep the consistency of her power shots more than Ostapenko," Bouchard said. "She didn’t get down on herself when Ostapenko hit a few winners, but at the same time, not even being that overly positive, which is something we don’t see that much from her." This observation was echoed by Billie Jean King Cup captain Anne Keothavong, who commented, "It was not her usual feisty kind of performance. It was a very good performance, though, one she was in total control of."

Despite this unusual demeanor, Sabalenka secured her victory without needing to unleash her typical aggressive style. She expressed satisfaction with her performance, especially considering her previous loss to Ostapenko. "I am really happy I was able to get this win, especially in straight sets. I am happy with the performance and the level," she stated. Sabalenka acknowledged the danger posed by Ostapenko, saying, "She is really dangerous. Last match I played against her, I could not do anything. She just smashed me off the court."

Looking ahead, Sabalenka is set to face Naomi Osaka in the fourth round. She noted, "Another aggressive player, another very powerful match. I am ready to bring the fight on, and I’m ready to fight and do anything it takes to get through." With a perfect record against Osaka in their previous encounters this year, Sabalenka will be aiming to maintain her winning streak as she seeks her first title at Wimbledon.

As she prepares for the upcoming match, Sabalenka also reflected on the inspiration she draws from Rafael Nadal's documentary series, emphasizing the importance of focus and motivation in her game. With the spirit of Nadal in mind, she is determined to improve her performance on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
