The NRG Stadium in Houston is making headlines as it hosts the World Cup match between Brazil and Japan. Uniquely, the stadium's roof remains closed for all games during the tournament, a decision not driven by weather but by the need to maintain the quality of the natural grass field.
Originally built for the Houston Texans of the NFL, the stadium underwent a significant transformation to replace its synthetic turf with natural grass to meet FIFA's requirements for the World Cup. To ensure that the grass remains in prime condition, the stadium's management has opted to keep the retractable roof closed, maintaining an internal temperature of around 22°C. This helps mitigate the extreme heat and humidity that Houston is known for, creating a more suitable environment for the players.
Inaugurated in August 2002, NRG Stadium was the first NFL arena equipped with a fully retractable roof. The construction took about 30 months and cost approximately $352 million, equivalent to around R$ 1.8 billion today. Over the years, the stadium has become a prominent venue for major sporting events, including NFL games, Super Bowls, concerts, and now, the World Cup.
Despite its advanced design, the stadium has faced challenges, including damage from hurricanes. In September 2008, Hurricane Ike caused significant damage, delaying the Houston Texans' season opener. More recently, Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 also impacted the stadium, necessitating repairs before it could host World Cup matches.
The match between Brazil and Japan will be the sixth game held at NRG Stadium during this World Cup. The stadium has already witnessed some memorable moments, including Germany's impressive 7-1 victory over Curaçao and the Netherlands' 5-1 win against Sweden. Following the Brazil vs. Japan match, the stadium will host one more game on July 4, coinciding with Independence Day in the United States, featuring Canada against the winner of the Netherlands vs. Morocco match.
As the World Cup progresses, NRG Stadium continues to play a crucial role in this global event, showcasing the blend of sports, culture, and the challenges of hosting such a prestigious tournament.
