Ecuador Declares National Holiday After World Cup Qualification

Ecuador is celebrating a significant milestone in its football history as the national team has qualified for the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2006. In a thrilling match held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on June 25, Ecuador triumphed over four-time World Cup champions Germany with a score of 2-1.

In recognition of this achievement, President Daniel Noboa announced a national holiday on June 26. He expressed gratitude to the players and coaching staff for their resilience and dedication, stating, "Thank you to the players and coaches who have uplifted and brought this great joy to the country despite the criticisms and insults they faced during tough times." This message was shared on social media as part of the official announcement.

The match began with Germany taking an early lead, scoring just two minutes into the game. However, Ecuador quickly responded with a goal from Nilson Angulo in the 9th minute, followed by a second goal from Gonzalo Plata in the 77th minute, sealing their victory.

Despite this loss, Germany remains in a strong position, having already secured a spot in the next round with six points, while Ivory Coast is second with the same points, and Ecuador stands third with four points.

The victory has sparked celebrations across Ecuador, with fans taking to the streets to commemorate one of the country's most memorable achievements in World Cup history.
