Denzel Dumfries Calls for More Intensity in Netherlands Squad Ahead of World Cup

Denzel Dumfries has called for a significant cultural shift within the Netherlands national team as they gear up for their key World Cup clash against Sweden. The Inter Milan wing-back believes that adopting a more confrontational approach is essential for the squad to succeed on the world stage.

In an interview with Voetbal International, Dumfries highlighted the contrasting atmospheres between his club and the national team. He emphasized that the Netherlands must learn from the high-pressure environment of the Inter dressing room to foster a winning mentality. "We need to demand more from each other," Dumfries stated. "This is the lesson we learned from the last European Championship. As a group, we can tell each other the truth more often and more openly. And I will do that because I take responsibility in that sense. A little fire in the team is important."

Dumfries pointed out that while the Dutch camp is known for its positive atmosphere, a lack of friction might be hindering the team's potential during crucial tournament matches. He noted, "In the Dutch national team, we have a very pleasant group, with a lot of spontaneity and positivity, but every now and then we could shake each other up a little more. Always with the intention of improving."

The Netherlands is currently competing in Group F of the World Cup alongside Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia. After a 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening match, Dumfries and his teammates are eager to secure a victory against Sweden. He believes that clashing with each other can be beneficial, stating, "There we can clash hard with each other, but there are so many strong personalities and firm opinions that you are practically forced to assert yourself."

Dumfries is determined to use his leadership role to prevent a repeat of past disappointments in major tournaments. He aims to encourage his teammates to be more direct and critical of one another, fostering a more resilient unit capable of navigating the challenges of the World Cup knockout stage. The Netherlands has previously reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, but they are now striving for their first-ever World Cup title.

While Dumfries calls for a more aggressive mental approach, he also acknowledged the team's technical improvements. He noted that the squad is becoming more disciplined in possession, which he believes will complement the increased intensity he is demanding. "More and more players are aware that the first ball must be played well and to the right foot," he remarked. As the Netherlands prepares for their upcoming fixtures, Dumfries hopes that combining technical precision with a fiery mentality in the dressing room will lead the Oranje back to glory.
