Yuto Horigome of Japan claimed the first Olympic gold medal in skateboarding when he won the men's street final in Tokyo on Sunday.

After a gruelling seven rounds, the Japanese skateboarder took the title in style with a score of 37.18.

Brazil’s Kelvin Hoefler and Jagger Eaton of the USA scored 36.15 and 35.35 respectively to secure the silver and bronze medals and complete the podium for the first set of Olympic medals in men's street skateboarding history.

One of skateboarding’s biggest stars, Nyjah Huston from the US, fell repeatedly trying to land tricks and placed 7th in the eight-man final.

Vitalina Batsarashkina takes gold in the women's 10m air pistol with an Olympic record of 240.3. She beat Antoaneta Kostadinova (239.4) into second despite the Bulgarian leading until the very last shot.

Batsarashkina, ranked 10th in the world, was third in qualifying and moved ahead of Kostadinova with a 10.7 with three shots to go. The 25-year-old Russian closed out with a 10.2 to earn the gold she just missed in Rio.

Jiang Ranxin of China who qualified top with an Olympic record, won bronze (218.0). She had matched Greece's Anna Korakaki's three-year-old record of 587 points to lead qualifying. Jiang was second, 0.9 points behind Batsarashkina heading into the closing shots, but had a pair of 9.2 shots and closed with a 9.0 to finish third.

Nina Salukvadze of Georgia made history by becoming the first athlete to compete in nine Olympics and announced her retirement to Russian media after failing to qualify for the finals. She finished 31st in 10-metre air pistol and will compete in 25-metre pistol on Friday.

Britain’s defending Olympic champion Andy Murray pulled out of the Tokyo 2020 men’s singles tournament on Sunday ahead of his first-round match.

The 34-year-old, who had been due to play Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, was sidelined by a thigh strain.

Murray has been replaced in the draw by Australian Max Purcell. The Scot will continue to compete in the men’s doubles tournament with Joe Salisbury, Team GB said, the pair having won their opening match on Saturday.

World number one Ash Barty's Olympic singles campaign was cut short on Sunday, with the Australian delivering a lacklustre performance against Sara Sorribes Tormo at the Tokyo Games.

The two-time Grand Slam champion, fresh off a win at Wimbledon earlier this month, was far from her best against the 48th-ranked Spaniard who put on a fiery display to claim the biggest victory of her career. It was her first meeting with Sorribes Tormo, who put on a composed performance to win 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 34 minutes.
