Cần Thơ to open new walking street on Reunification Day

CẦN THƠ — The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Cần Thơ will open its first pedestrian street, Ninh Kiều, on April 30, the 47th National Reunification Day.

The 700-metre walking street will be located a section of the Hai Ba Trưng Street in Ninh Kiều District, next to the Ninh Kiều Park.

The Ninh Kiều Park, on the banks of the Hậu River, is one of the most attractive places in the city with the Ninh Kiều pedestrian bridge and a wharf from where visitors can take boat tours.

The pedestrian street will open from 6pm-10pm every Saturday. It will host several cultural activities including exhibitions and concerts, not to mention food stalls with local specialities and other dishes from different parts of the country.

Both locals and visitors will be able to enjoy tai tử music, a traditional music form particular to southern Viet Nam that is more than a 100 years old.

Trần Quốc Thanh, permanent member of the steering committee for building Ninh Kiều pedestrian street , said at a conference on Thursday that it would become one of the city’s most attractive destinations, attracting more visitors and promoting local tourism.

It would also contribute to improving local living standards and introduce the city’s history and culture to tourists, he said.

The city would continue to upgrade the street, build more facilities and organise more and more cultural activities towards making it walking street a daily affair in the future, he added. —VNS
