Will I get fined for refusing COVID-19 vaccination in Vietnam?

Authorities in Vietnam encourage all residents to get vaccinated for COVID-19 to protect their heath and have yet to fine anyone for refusing inoculation.

According to Dang Thanh Huyen, an official from the Expanded Program on Immunization, the Law on Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases stipulates that competent authorities have the right to require people, especially those in virus epicenters, to receive vaccination.

However, Vietnamese authorities only encourage residents to get vaccinated for their own safety and have yet to impose any penalty on those who refuse inoculation.

COVID-19 vaccination has been expedited across the country, especially in southern localities where the pandemic has become very serious and complicated.

During previous inoculation campaigns, a number of people did not receive the shots when they were given the opportunities, Huyen said, adding that they either refused vaccination or were not healthy enough to receive the jabs.

In Ho Chi Minh City, previous vaccination drives did not target residents over 65 and those with underlying health conditions.

As preparations and safety of vaccination are now improved, people with a medical history or allergies are still able to receive the doses if they are in suitable health conditions.

More residents have also signed up for vaccination due to the increasingly serious pandemic situation, the health official stated.

The southern city initiated its fifth COVID-19 vaccination campaign on July 22.

By the end of Monday, the campaign had administered over 920,000 doses to local residents.
