On the morning of October 4, the Argentine national football team extended their winning streak with a resounding 7-0 victory over Burkina Faso. This match was significant as it came just before the anticipated return of their star player, Lionel Messi. The team, under the guidance of coach Lionel Scaloni, is focused on preparing for Messi's farewell match, which is set to take place soon.
Messi arrived early to join the team's preparations, having returned to his hometown of Rosario with his family on October 3. Scaloni confirmed that Messi would participate in the final training session with the team immediately after the match against Burkina Faso.
The match against Burkina Faso was marked by the inclusion of several under-23 players who arrived in Buenos Aires just hours before the game due to travel delays. Despite these challenges, Argentina dominated the match from start to finish, securing a convincing victory.
Prior to this match, Argentina had also triumphed over Bolivia with a score of 4-0 in Córdoba. According to ESPN, the players are not overly concerned about their opponents; their primary focus is on Messi's return and preparing for his final international appearance.
Messi's farewell match is scheduled against another African team, Benin, at 7:00 AM on October 7 at the Estadio Monumental. Following the win against Burkina Faso, midfielder Enzo Fernández expressed excitement about Messi's imminent return, stating, "Now we are waiting for Messi. I believe he will join us soon. We are all looking forward to having him back, not just for the next match, but to spend these last days together in training. It’s important for us to have him back in the team." He added that the entire team has missed Messi greatly and they are eager to enjoy some time together, including a barbecue.
Coach Scaloni acknowledged the emotional weight of Messi's upcoming farewell, stating, "I imagine there will be many emotions. It will be a special day for everyone, especially since Leo (Messi) has been a pivotal figure for us." Messi himself has chosen Cristian Romero to be the new captain of the Argentine national team, a decision made in conjunction with Scaloni.
Romero, who scored in Argentina's previous match against Bolivia, has embraced this new role with pride. He will officially receive the captain's armband from Messi during the tribute match, symbolizing a new chapter for the Argentine team as they transition into the post-Messi era.
