Messi Approaches 100 Goals for Inter Miami Ahead of Cruz Azul Match

Lionel Messi is on the brink of a significant milestone as he approaches 100 goals for Inter Miami. The Argentine forward scored his 99th goal during a thrilling 2-2 draw against Nashville in the MLS on September 13, 2026. In the 62nd minute of the match, Messi received a pass from Rodrigo De Paul just outside the penalty area, took a touch, and curled a left-footed shot into the far corner, beating goalkeeper Brian Schwake.

This goal marked Messi's 99th for Inter Miami across all competitions since joining the club in the summer of 2023. With just one more goal needed to become the first player in the history of the Florida club to reach the 100-goal mark, all eyes will be on him in the upcoming match against Mexican champions Cruz Azul on September 17, 2026.

Messi's achievement is particularly remarkable considering he has only been with Inter Miami for a little over three years. He made his move to the United States after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023 and immediately made an impact. In his first season, despite joining mid-season, he scored 11 goals in 14 matches, playing a crucial role in helping Inter Miami secure their first-ever trophy, the Leagues Cup.

In 2024, Messi continued to shine, netting 23 goals in all competitions, including 20 in MLS, despite facing injuries and participating in the Copa America with Argentina. His efforts contributed to Inter Miami winning the Supporters' Shield for the best record during the regular MLS season.

Messi has maintained his high scoring rate over the past two seasons, not only as a key striker but also as a central figure in the team's play, orchestrating attacks and creating chances in the final third. His nearing of the 100-goal mark at the age of 39 showcases that his goal-scoring ability remains sharp even after leaving top-tier European football.

The goal against Nashville was also Messi's 19th in MLS for the 2026 season, placing him at the top of the league's scoring chart. This marks the third consecutive season in which the Argentine forward has achieved double-digit goals in Major League Soccer.

However, the joy of Messi's latest achievement was somewhat overshadowed by the draw against Nashville. Inter Miami led 2-1 until the dying moments of the match when Sam Surridge scored in the 90+1 minute to complete a brace and secure a point for the visitors. This result means Inter Miami still has work to do in the Eastern Conference standings, but for Messi, the focus now shifts to reaching that coveted 100-goal milestone.
