Luka Modric Credits Jose Mourinho for Real Madrid Move

Luka Modric, a key figure at Real Madrid, has shared insights into his transfer to the club in 2012, highlighting the crucial role played by then-coach Jose Mourinho. Modric, who has become a symbol of success at Real Madrid, recalled how Mourinho's unwavering commitment was instrumental in making the deal happen.

In an interview with Diario Marca, Modric expressed his gratitude towards Mourinho, stating, "Overall, the club deserves credit, but I think Mourinho was the most important factor in bringing me here. He did everything in his power to ensure I became that summer's signing." Before joining Real Madrid, Modric had an impressive four-season stint at Tottenham, where he was recognized as one of Europe's top midfielders.

Real Madrid acquired Modric for €35 million, a move that raised eyebrows at the time. However, he quickly established himself as a key player and went on to become a club legend, winning numerous prestigious titles. Modric revealed that the negotiations between Real Madrid and Tottenham were lengthy and challenging. He noted that if Mourinho had not been so persistent, the transfer might not have materialized.

Despite only having one full season under Mourinho, Modric reflected on the significant lessons he learned during that time. "I learned a lot in the year I worked with him, but I wish I could have played for him longer," he said. The 2012/13 season marked Mourinho's final year at Real Madrid, and although the team did not secure major titles that year, Modric's impact was undeniable.

Currently, Modric plays for AC Milan, with his contract running until June 2027. When asked about the possibility of returning to Real Madrid to play under Mourinho, he humorously remarked that it might be too late. Nevertheless, he expressed a strong desire to return to Madrid after his playing career, hoping to contribute to the club in another capacity. "I hope to come back and work for Real Madrid, rather than relying solely on my past contributions. Madrid is my home, and I want to return there to live after I retire," he concluded, emphasizing his love for the city and the club.
