LCK Enters Warring States Era, Halting Gen.G's Reign

The League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) has officially entered what is being termed the 'Spring and Autumn Warring States period,' following the conclusion of its 2026 regular season on August 23. Gen.G has secured the top position for the third consecutive year, but this season has been marked by intense competition and unexpected challenges.

Despite Gen.G's achievement, their performance has shown signs of instability, a stark contrast to their previous seasons where they dominated the league. The regular season was shortened this year due to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, reducing the number of matches and adding to the pressure on teams vying for playoff positions.

In a surprising turn of events, Gen.G faced a 1–2 defeat against DiPlus KIA in their final regular season match, a game that put their top spot in jeopardy until the very end. This season, for the first time in five years, no single team has been able to establish itself as the absolute powerhouse, leading to fierce competition among the top teams.

Gen.G's struggles can be attributed to various factors, including emerging rival teams and a shift in the competitive meta. While the team has maintained a cohesive roster for two years, rival teams have adapted and improved their strategies against them. Notably, T1 and Hanwha Lifee Sports have remained strong contenders, with Hanwha competing closely for the top spot.

As the playoffs approach, Gen.G will need to address the weaknesses exposed during the regular season if they hope to succeed in the postseason and potentially reach the League of Legends World Championship final. They have already advanced directly to the second round of the playoffs, while the competition intensifies among other teams vying for a chance at the title.

The upcoming playoffs will feature a 'Play-In' stage, where KT Rolster will face the top teams from the Rise Group. The two teams that emerge victorious will join the playoffs, further heightening the stakes in this already competitive season.
