In the lead-up to the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinals, Malaysia's midfielder Sergio Aguero has responded to criticism regarding the team's perceived lack of strength. Some Malaysian fans have referred to the current squad as the 'C team' due to the absence of key players. However, Aguero insists that such remarks do not deter the team's focus; instead, they serve as motivation to showcase their capabilities.
Speaking to Hmetro, Aguero expressed pride in Malaysia's achievements in the tournament, acknowledging that many did not expect the team to reach the semifinals. He stated, 'We are proud of what we have accomplished in this tournament. We know we were underestimated before the competition. Many thought we were just the 'C team' of Malaysia, but I do not care about that. We have proven our abilities and train hard every day. Honestly, this is a great team, from the coach to the players and everyone involved. We are very happy to have reached the semifinals.'
Aguero is aware of the challenges ahead as Malaysia prepares to face Vietnam, a team he describes as very strong and possessing one of the top lineups in Southeast Asia. However, he remains optimistic about Malaysia's chances of advancing to the finals. 'We know that Vietnam is a strong team, but in football, anything can happen in 90 minutes or even 180 minutes. We just have to give our best. Of course, we want to secure a spot in the finals. First, we achieved our goal of reaching the semifinals, and now we are working hard to reach the finals.'
The first leg of the semifinal will take place in Malaysia on August 16, followed by the return leg at My Dinh Stadium on August 19.
