Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish tennis star, has recently withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open 2026, citing an incomplete recovery from a wrist injury. This withdrawal has sparked concerns among fans and analysts regarding his potential absence from the upcoming US Open, scheduled to begin on August 24, 2026, in New York.

Bob Moran, the director of the Cincinnati Open, shared insights about Alcaraz’s situation, stating, "We know Alcaraz is doing everything he can to return to competition soon. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to welcome him back to Cincinnati Open in the future." Alcaraz's decision to withdraw follows his earlier absence from the ATP Masters 1000 Canadian Open 2026, where he also could not compete due to the same injury.

Since his last match against Finland's Otto Virtanen at the Barcelona Open on April 14, 2026, Alcaraz has not participated in any official tournaments. This extended break from competition has led him to miss several ATP Masters 1000 events and two Grand Slam tournaments: Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Currently ranked second in the world with 8,160 points, Alcaraz trails Jannik Sinner, who holds 13,450 points. However, if he misses two consecutive major tournaments, including the US Open, Alcaraz's ranking could significantly decline. He is set to lose 1,000 points for not defending his Cincinnati Open title. If he also withdraws from the US Open, where he is the defending champion, he would lose an additional 2,000 points.

Should Alcaraz need to sit out the remainder of the season for treatment, he risks losing all points accumulated from the previous year, potentially dropping his total to around 3,650 points, which could see him fall out of the top six in the ATP rankings.
