Didier Deschamps Not Joining Al Ahli After Discussions

Didier Deschamps, who was recently relieved of his duties as the head coach of the French national football team following their defeat in the World Cup third-place match on July 18, has been linked with several clubs since his departure. One of the clubs mentioned was Saudi Arabian team Al Ahli, which initiated discussions regarding his potential appointment.

After 14 years leading the French team, the 57-year-old coach has expressed his desire to continue his career in football, stating that he has not made any definitive decisions about his future. "I have not made a decision for what comes next," he mentioned prior to the World Cup, emphasizing his intention to remain involved in football in some capacity. Deschamps also noted, "I am fortunate because I have the chance to choose my path."

While he had not completely ruled out the possibility of joining Al Ahli, it appears that the negotiations will not come to fruition. Sources indicate that one of the main challenges in reaching an agreement lies in the decision-making process within Saudi football, which differs significantly from that in Europe. The involvement of multiple stakeholders in strategic decisions can complicate and prolong negotiations, and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) often has the final say.

As a result, discussions with Didier Deschamps have not progressed as anticipated. Deschamps previously acknowledged in November 2025 that he had been approached by a Saudi club, although he refrained from naming them. "I have had contacts, not specifically with them," he stated in an interview on Téléfoot. "I won't name names, but they are aware of my situation." With the World Cup 2026 approaching, speculation about Deschamps' future continues, but for now, a move to Al Ahli seems unlikely.
