Josko Gvardiol Signs New Manchester City Contract Until 2031

Josko Gvardiol has signed a new contract with Manchester City that will keep him at the club until 2031. The 24-year-old Croatian defender had attracted interest from several top European clubs but chose to commit his future to the Premier League side ahead of the World Cup.

Upon returning to Manchester, Gvardiol finalized the deal, which includes an option for an extra year that can be activated by the club. During discussions with Manchester City, Gvardiol was assured of his significance in the squad as the team transitions from Pep Guardiola’s illustrious 10-year tenure.

City views Gvardiol, along with Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, as central figures in the squad under Guardiola’s successor, Enzo Maresca. Foden recently signed a new contract, while Haaland committed to a nine-and-a-half-year deal in January 2025.

In a club announcement, Gvardiol expressed his enthusiasm for the contract renewal, stating, “As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted. The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one – and the club provides absolutely everything for players. It’s the best club in the world to be at.”

Gvardiol also praised the quality of his teammates, calling the squad “world-class” and full of potential, and expressed his belief in the team’s future success.

Hugo Viana, Manchester City's director of football, emphasized the club's belief in Gvardiol, describing him as one of the best defenders globally. Viana highlighted Gvardiol's versatility, speed, and strength, as well as his exceptional attacking capabilities. He also commended Gvardiol’s determination to excel, aligning perfectly with the club's vision.

Gvardiol is set to join a strong City squad for pre-season matches in Hong Kong and Seoul, South Korea. Despite sending numerous players to the World Cup, City will still field a competitive team, including Gvardiol, who was part of the Croatian squad that reached the last-16 stage.

This season is expected to be significant for Gvardiol, who has become an influential player since joining Manchester City in 2023. With interest from major clubs, the club is pleased to have secured his future, as replacing a defender of his caliber would have been challenging.
