The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has initiated talks with Pep Guardiola, aiming to persuade him to become the new head coach of the national football team. This comes after Gennaro Gattuso left the position in April due to Italy's inability to qualify for their third consecutive World Cup.

FIGC officials, including Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo, met with Guardiola over three days to present their vision for the future of Italian football. The federation is reportedly willing to make significant adjustments to their budget to secure Guardiola's appointment, reflecting the urgency of their situation.

Italian FA president Giovanni Malago acknowledged the financial constraints but emphasized that exceptions might be made for a coach of Guardiola's caliber. "In the short to medium term, saying we need to tighten our belts is an understatement," he stated.

Guardiola, who recently parted ways with Manchester City after a decade filled with success, is currently a free agent. His tenure at City included winning 20 trophies and achieving a remarkable win ratio of 70.8 percent. The FIGC's discussions with Guardiola are part of a broader strategy to revitalize Italian football, which has seen a decline since winning the European Championships in 2021 under Roberto Mancini.

The federation aims for a comprehensive overhaul that would not only impact the senior national team but also all other national teams. Guardiola's interest in the role remains uncertain, as he has expressed a desire to take a break from football to spend more time with his family.
