Anthony Taylor, one of England's most esteemed referees, has declared his retirement from elite officiating following a distinguished career that spanned more than two decades and encompassed 831 matches. The 47-year-old's final assignment was officiating the World Cup last-16 match between Portugal and Spain, marking the end of an era in English football.

Over his impressive career, Taylor officiated 668 matches in the professional game within England, including 432 Premier League matches over 16 seasons. He was a fixture in the top-flight, having officiated every major domestic cup final, including the FA Cup finals in 2017 and 2020, the 2015 League Cup final, the 2015 Community Shield, and the 2018 Championship playoff final.

Reflecting on his career, Taylor expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey. He stated, "Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant. The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career." He thanked his assistants, refereeing colleagues, and especially his family for their unwavering support.

In addition to his domestic achievements, Taylor enjoyed a significant international career, spending 14 years on the FIFA international list. He officiated at two World Cups (2022 and 2026), two European Championships (2020 and 2024), and two Club World Cups (2022 and 2025). His international experience includes overseeing 163 matches, featuring some of the biggest fixtures in world football, such as the 2020 UEFA Super Cup, the 2021 Nations League final, the 2022 Club World Cup final, the 2023 Europa League final, and the 2024 Champions League semi-final.

Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer at Pro Ref, praised Taylor's contributions to the game, stating, "Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years, both domestically and on the international stage. He has been repeatedly trusted to officiate in the biggest games, including Portugal against Spain in this summer’s World Cup, which ultimately capped off an outstanding career." Webb highlighted Taylor's professionalism and his role as a mentor for the next generation of officials.

As Taylor steps away from the pitch, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the best and most successful referees in English football history, with a career marked by integrity, dedication, and a commitment to the sport.
