Moises Caicedo Takes Over Captaincy for Ecuador at World Cup 2026

Moises Caicedo Takes Over Captaincy for Ecuador at World Cup 2026

In a notable shift in leadership, Enner Valencia has officially transferred the captaincy of the Ecuador national football team to midfielder Moises Caicedo just before their crucial Round of 16 match against Mexico in the 2026 World Cup. This moment was shared by the Ecuador Football Federation on their social media platforms on June 28.

Valencia, a 36-year-old forward and a legendary figure in Ecuadorian football, expressed his faith in his teammates during a speech before the match. "The only thing I think about is hugging all of you after the game. I believe it will be a hug of happiness, a hug of the ticket to advance," he said, calling Caicedo forward to receive the armband.

Having played for clubs like West Ham and Everton in the English Premier League, Valencia made his debut for the national team in 2012 and holds the record for the most goals scored for Ecuador, with 49 goals in 108 matches. He began wearing the captain's armband regularly during the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup and subsequent tournaments. Valencia recalled the moment he was first appointed captain during a match in Argentina, emphasizing the responsibility it carried. "I don’t want people to remember me only for my goals or what I did on the field, but for being a good person," he stated.

Caicedo, a rising star of Ecuadorian football, has made his mark in clubs like Independiente del Valle, Brighton, and Chelsea, where he joined for a staggering total of $146 million in the summer of 2023. At Chelsea, he has already captained the team in several matches, including two Premier League games against Manchester United and Manchester City in April. Internationally, the 24-year-old has been part of the national team since 2020, scoring three goals in 64 appearances, and previously captained Ecuador in a friendly against New Zealand in November 2025.

This match against Mexico marks Caicedo's first official game as captain, following Valencia's departure from the pitch during Ecuador's 2-1 victory over Germany in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. Ecuador has qualified for the World Cup four times, in 2002, 2006, 2014, and 2022, with their best performance being a Round of 16 finish in 2006, where they were eliminated by England. They have a chance to replicate that achievement if they defeat Mexico in the Round of 16 on July 1 in Mexico City.
