Cristiano Ronaldo Mourns Loss of Ricardo Carvalho's Father

In a poignant moment before the upcoming match against Croatia in the 2026 World Cup, the Portuguese national football team faced a somber reality with the news of Manuel Ribeiro de Carvalho's passing at the age of 69. Manuel was the father of Ricardo Carvalho, the team's assistant coach, who immediately left the team's training camp in Florida to return to Portugal for the funeral.

Upon receiving the heartbreaking news, the entire Portuguese squad observed a minute of silence in memory of Manuel Ribeiro. The players and coaching staff formed a circle, holding hands with their heads bowed, creating a solemn and emotional atmosphere. Cristiano Ronaldo, who played alongside Carvalho for over a decade, was particularly affected, embracing Carvalho tightly and sharing in his grief. Coach Roberto Martínez also offered support with a comforting pat on the shoulder as Carvalho departed the team.

The Portuguese Football Federation shared touching images on social media, accompanied by the message: "We are always with you. Stay strong, Ricardo Carvalho." They also extended their deepest condolences to Carvalho and his family in an official statement.

Ricardo Carvalho has been a trusted assistant to Roberto Martínez since the Spanish coach took over the Portuguese national team in 2023. Prior to this role, he served as an assistant to André Villas-Boas at Olympique de Marseille. As a player, Carvalho was one of the best defenders in Portuguese football history, earning 89 caps for the national team and winning three Premier League titles with Chelsea. He was a key figure in José Mourinho's legendary defense during the 2004/05 season, which conceded only 15 goals in 38 league matches.

Carvalho and Ronaldo's partnership peaked with their victory at the 2016 European Championship. During their time at Real Madrid, they also celebrated numerous titles together, including La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
