EU draft law seeks to end import of goods linked to deforestation

HCMC – The European Union (EU) might ban companies from importing products deemed to accelerate deforestation.

The EU reached an agreement on December 6 to prevent companies from selling products that drive deforestation to the EU market, according to the European Commission (EC).

A draft law of the EU sees palm oil, cattle, soy, coffee, cocoa, timber and rubber as the main drivers of deforestation.

The draft law received a positive response from the EC as it said the law would ensure a set of crucial goods placed on the EU market no longer contribute to deforestation and forest degradation in the EU and elsewhere in the world.

It was proposed in November last year.

Once the draft law is passed, EU companies importing such products would have to conduct strict inspections on their origin before bringing them into the EU market, and they would have 18 months to implement the new rules.
