Vung Tau City, SCG, and Long Son Petrochemicals expand waste segregation at source project

This year, the companies continue their commitment to Sustainable Development and the commitment under the framework of Public Private Collaboration (PPC) towards a circular economy in plastic waste management in Vietnam by collaborating with Vung Tau City to expand the waste segregation at source program to the residential area in Long Son Commune.

Mr. Thanapat Kaweetraiphop, Commercial Director of LSP, said: “The highlight of waste management at residential area program in Long Son is the proactive and strong collaboration among local authorities, businesses and residents, specifically Vung Tau City People's Committee, Long Son Commune People's Committee, Hamlet 1 Executive Board, and the People's Committee of Long Son Commune, Long Son Petrochemicals (a subsidiary of SCG Chemicals) and enthusiastic participation of individuals and organizations in the waste management chain such as garbage collectors, junk shop, gift-exchanging shops, technological applications, and recycling units such as Vesco, Gia Linh, Anh Toan Junk shop, Minh Phuong Grocery and mGreen. The core group of the Hamlet Executive Board is environmental ambassadors of the project who are in charge of propagating, guiding and encouraging villagers to implement the project. The companies not only want to raise the awareness of Circular Economy (make-use-return) by segregating waste at source but also to create a sustainable waste management program as a blueprint that the other communities can duplicate”.

The program will educate and encourage participants to segregate wastes into 3 types which are green bin for organic waste, orange bin for recyclables waste and yellow bin for other types of waste. Organic waste will be used as animal feed and compost to make fertilizer. The remaining garbage is transported to the local waste collection unit. Recyclable waste will be collected in 3 ways; periodically, daily collection, and on-demand. mGreen mobile application is brought to use for collecting waste segregation data which allow participants to be able to easily track their transaction in real time. Waste can be exchanged for cash or gifts or bonus points.

Waste source owners are encouraged to exchange garbage every Sunday at the Recyclable Garbage Collection Points to earn points for exchanging gifts. This year, Hamlet 1 has deployed at least 5 Green House sites in the area, including: Headquarters of Hamlet 1, Long Son 1 Primary School, Huong Duong Kindergarten, Bach Dang Secondary School, and Hung Long Tu Pagoda.

The Waste Segregation at Source in Residential Area program will be conducted the pilot program in Hamlet 1 with a goal that by April 2023, all residents of Hamlet 1 will join the segregation program and more than 50% of recyclable waste will be collected and sent to recycle process. The success of the program will be an important stepping stone to solve waste issue and to create a circular economy community.
