"The hospital has admitted 69 critical Covid-19 patients from lower-leveled medical facilities since the fourth wave. Many of the patients had to be put on ECMO, long-term mechanical ventilation," Dr. Pham Dang Phuc, working at the Department of Intensive Care, said. "There are even pregnant women under our treatment."

Phuc said 29 coronavirus patients at the department had so far been treated and released from the department. "This is a very great source of motivation for us doctors," he added.

Phuc and his colleagues perform a tracheostomy on a critical patient transferred from Bac Giang province. Such a procedure gives patients better respiratory care.

Doctors doing the tracheostomy, however, face high risk of exposure to coronavirus, as the virus from the patient's lungs might spread into the air.
